Introduction to R for Economists by Nick Huntington-Klein

“Relative Performance Evaluation and Discretionary Power: Official Governance in China” (in Chinese, with Shuo Chen), China Economic Quarterly, accepted.

This paper empirically tests the hypothesis that economic performance matters for China's local officials' political selection by using the county-level dataset from 2000 to 2007. We find the local official’s likelihood of promotion increases with the growth of fiscal revenue during his tenure. We also find the existence of discretion: the promotion probabilities of officials ranking in top 5 more depend on the preferences of upper-level officials.
